Thompson, Coe, Cousins & Irons was named the most active law firm for insurance litigation in the US federal district courts over the past five years, according to LexMachina’s 2020 Insurance Report. “Thompson, Coe, Cousins & Irons filed the most insurance cases with 1,143 cases, nearly always appearing for defendants.” Other firms identified in the report included Hinshaw & Culbertson, Lewis Brisbois, Cozen O’Connor, and Freeborn Peters, among others.

“The Southern District of Texas had the most Insurance case filings from 2015 to 2019. State Farm Mutual Automobile Insurance Company saw the most cases with over 2,000 Insurance cases.”

The report looks at trends and insights in insurance cases in federal district court litigation from 2010 to 2019, with a focus on the last five years. The report defines “insurance” cases as those in which an insurer or policyholder is litigating one or me claims arising out of an insurance policy. The insurance case-type categories analyzed were: Auto Insurance, Uninsured Motorist/Underinsured Motorist (UM/UIM), Business Liability, Business Interruption, Life Insurance, Hurricane Related, and Homeowners Insurance.

The second section of the report focuses on March through June 2020 in order to examine the impact of COVID-19 on insurance litigation. “Insurance cases were up 14% in 2020 compared to 2019, and business interruption up 300%) and business liability cases (up 9%) were a large reason for that increase.”
