DOUBLE-CHECK IF YOU’VE BEEN USING THE ELECTRONIC FORM I-9

If you downloaded the Form I-9 between November 14 and November 17, 2016, take a minute to review Section 1 of those Employment Eligibility Verifications.

There was a glitch in the downloadable version of the Form I-9 that was rolled out on November 14th. The glitch caused Social Security numbers entered on the electronic form to be transposed or scrambled when the form was printed. Example: If an employer entered 123-45-6789 into the Society Security number field on the electronic form, the number might appear as 123-34-6789 when the form was printed.

Employers who downloaded and have been using a Form I-9 that contains the glitch should download and save a new Form I-9 from uscis.gov/i-9. USCIS repaired and reposted a glitch-free Form I-9 on November 17, 2016.

HOW TO CORRECT FORM I-9’S WITH TRANSPOSED NUMBERS:

If employees’ Social Security numbers do not appear correctly on Form I-9’s that have already been completed, have the employee cross out the transposed Social Security number in Section 1, write in the correct Social Security number, and initial and date the change.

Employers should then attach a written explanation to the corrected Form I-9 about why the correction was made in the event of an audit.
