Dallas Partner Chantel Cheatham Featured In Law360 Diversity Snapshot

July 10, 2019 Media Mention

Law360 recently solicited responses from law firms across the nation for their Diversity Snapshot inquiry: Please tell us about a time when your perspective as a person of color, a member of the LGBTQ community or a person with a disability benefited your work as a lawyer. Of over 100 responses, from firms of all sizes to corporations, nonprofit organizations and the highest levels of government, Dallas Labor & Employment Partner Chantel Cheatham was one of a dozen attorneys featured. Her response:

"I am a partner in my firm’s Labor & Employment Section and defend employers in discrimination cases. As an African American, I’m frequently the “cultural interpreter” for my clients, explaining why something was perceived as hostile or served to alienate their employee. I once had a client host a luncheon to celebrate its African American employees. The menu? Fried chicken and watermelon. When an employee filed a charge of discrimination, I was able “translate” from the employee’s perspective. My ethnicity equips me with the vocabulary for situations like this and to identify possible issues before they evolve into a crisis."
